5PM Newscast July 6, 2012
We began with breaking news in this newscast after an SUV and a camper collided on the interstate, holding up traffic. We were short staffed, so I sent out my only available photographer to get some video about an hour before the show. The photog sent the video back on a laptop, and we were able to get it in the show. For the next story, I used a bam with video inside it to introduce the pkg about the house explosion that killed two people. The video was compelling because it showed what was left of the home. Also, I used a map to show where the teen died from a farm injury, because we did not have video and it was about an away from our metro area.

It was election night for many races in Illinois during this particular newscast, so I was busy updating numbers and pulling together my newscast at the same time. I began my newscast with a liveshot at the headquarters for Congressman Dave Loebsack, as his race was the most talked about. I then took a look at all the latest numbers with graphics made especially for the elections. (Some of the numbers hadn't come in yet.) I set the road rage story apart by putting my anchor at the bam with a graphic. It was a story that deserved special showcasing and I worked with my director to make that happen.

This was a slow Friday, where we bounced around a lot of ideas during the afternoon meeting. One thing that was on the minds of everyone in the Quad Cities... Mayflies!! I worked with the reporter and the photographer... to discuss the best place to get a great shot of the bugs. I also allowed for time for my anchors to chat after that story, and show off their personalities. I decided to follow that story with weather, because it was one of the first weekends to get really hot. Also, I left in the B block on this show, because I am proud of the bam for the Brewery expansion story. It was taken from a shot in the pkg and I think it works really well to showcase the summer story.

I tore my reporter from his construction story live shot to cover a river rescue on the Mississippi River, where police were searching for a missing man. We were live at the river as police were calling off the search until the following morning. I am proud of the video we got, and our quick reaction. This was also a newscast I quickly put together after producing the five in the same day. I remain calm when I am producing two newscasts in one day. I know I am working double the pace, and I try to make the most of the time I have. I also used a bam to set the River Drive construction story apart, because that road is a highly traveled road in the Davenport metro area.
